Geography Fun!

We are still on Christmas Break for a few more days, (which has been delightful, by the way) and  as the kids are sleeping in, I thought I’d update you all on a bit of change with our curriculum for the remainder of the school year.

The one subject I haven’t been  thrilled with this year, has been geography. My initial plan and thought was that it so would be good for the kids to really learn and memorize their states and capitals. With that in mind, I printed out a «curriculum » I found online called Sketch the States. We would go over information about each state and sketch the shape of the state and its flag. The  kids didn’t mind it too much at first, even enjoyed it, but over time, we all came  to find it a boring exercise instead of active fun learning. The kids and I were growing increasingly bored with it and I decided that I want us all to enjoy geography class for the rest of the school year. Not to say that I will never incorporate some of the state worksheets, but I realized it was not a good stand-alone course of action.

So...I started doing something I love doing... curriculum shopping!

A friend of mine has been using Beautiful Feet Geography for her daughter, she really likes it and feels it is geared more towards older grades. As you already know, I am a huge fan of Beautiful Feet! Their books are gorgeous and this particular curriculum comes with stunning maps! I knew it would be a good fit for Brandon, he will be able to read the books independently and do the map work, and I am confident he will enjoy it.

.

For Ben and Natalie I was wanting something fun! I came across this Passport to the World curriculum from Masterbook and watched a couple reviews on YouTube and I was sold! The kids will learn about all different countries and cultures, find them on the map and even learn how to say a few words in all sorts of different languages. The activity book even includes recipes so we can try delicacies from the different places we learn about! The thing I’m sure they will find the most exciting is that they will get to «stamp» their passport once we finish visiting each location.

We study Geography every Friday and my goal for the rest of the school year is make the last day of every week a bit more exciting and fun! I also have big plans for our Friday art class I’ll share with you later...
Until next time...
